What is TikTok?

TikTok is a social media app that was created by the Chinese company ByteDance. It is a video-sharing app that allows users to create and share short videos with others on the app. The app has been downloaded over 1 billion times, and it continues to grow in popularity.

How do you use it?

The app is easy to use – just tap on the record button to start recording, and then release the button when you’re done. You can also add filters, music, and other effects to your videos.

What are the privacy risks?

TikTok collects data about its users, including their location and contact information. It also allows advertisers to target you based on what videos they see being shared by other people who share similar interests or demographics.

If you're wondering about privacy risks with TikTok, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Privacy Risk #1 - Your personal information is being shared with advertisers who want your to buy their products. Good news is the TikTok does give users the ability to control how much data is shared with these advertisers, but you must select this option - it's not on by default.

  • Privacy Risk #2 - The company that owns this app has access to your location and contact information without asking permission first. Yep, most social apps have location settings on to "enhance the user experience". In reality it's more of a privacy concern of other having access to where you are without you potentially being aware you're bein watched.

  • Privacy Risk #3 - You're shown ads for products that you don't even want because the app is tracking what videos you watch. Similar to privacy risk #1, but as a user continues to engage with the app - your giving additional data to TikTok advertisers to make their ads more enticing to you.
